An inspired family 3 month long vacation

One morning, mother of two and wife, Michelle woke up and decided to take her family on a life-changing adventure that started in Peru.

I could barely remember the dream by the time I jumped out of bed that morning. I was so excited about the inspiration that had descended upon me in my sleep that I could barely get past our morning cup of coffee to bring it up to my husband Mark. “I had a dream we took our kids on an adventure. We traveled and saw the world. I want to do that with you and the kids, not someday but now!' Mark looked at me with surprise and amusement as this was not typical Sunday morning banter, but he listened to me as I went on about my newfound inspiration. Little did we know in that moment we were about to change the direction of our lives.

I had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia 3 years before. We were living in Toronto at the time, parents to young kids, and I had a busy job that I enjoyed but could no longer do because of the pain I was in. On our doctor's suggestion, we packed up our family and moved to a small community on the outskirts of Niagara Falls. Mark made a long daily commute to his job, but we were enjoying the relaxed lifestyle of a small town. For the next couple of years, I spent a lot of time focusing on my mind, and spirit, trying to heal my body and soul. When the idea first came up to travel, it seemed like it was a perfect time as I was starting to feel better physically, and we could predict what the future would hold when it came to my heath.

Within a few days, we knew where we wanted to take our family on its first adventure. South America had always been a place that we thought was rich in culture and history, it seemed to us as a great place as any to start. Peru was first on the list of countries I wanted to visit. We had seen the breath-taking pictures of Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca but it was the documentaries we had watched on the people of the Andes and their spirit that really drew our attention to the beauty of Peru. Mark and I decided we would take our family on a 6-month sabbatical, and backpack Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

Two weeks after I brought up my grand inspiration over morning coffee, our plan to travel was put into motion. We put our newly purchased home up for sale and started selling our possessions in the pursuit of downsizing. Mark and I spoke with our children, Sydney and Luc, who were 9 and 6 at the time, and explained our plans to travel full time and worldschool them along the way. For the next eighteen months, we planned, saved, and prepared to take our Inspired Family Adventure. Our first stop'¦Lima, Peru.

Can we change the world? Do we as individuals cause massive shifts in history or are the changes we make merely seeds planted in others?
