Switzerland and Peru: Growing together
Doris Leuthard, the head of the Federal Council in Switzerland, is shortly due to pay an official visit to Peru on April 21. Doris considers that Peru and Switzerland have similar objectives in regards to development projects and culture. She said to El Comercio that strengthened bilateral relations and a cultural exchange between Switzerland and Peru allow us to shorten geographic distances.
Peru is part of the SECO, which is an Economic and Development Program under the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs Departments in Switzerland. SECO’s main areas of support are the development of economic institutions, private sector competitiveness and access to basic public services.
The new SECO’s programme runs from 2017-2020 and has an investment of 70 million Swiss francs (around 225 million soles) and aims to strengthen relevant institutions to improve the competitive capacity of the Peruvian Economy. The program provides drinking water to rural areas and will assist Peru in the event of a natural catastrophe. In that way, Switzerland has recently provided humanitarian assistance and development programs to help small villages overcome the climate change effects of the Niño weather phenomenon.
SECO also has developed a program called Oro Responsable which is an initiative that seeks to create a more sustainable mining sector in Peru.
She thanks the President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski for his invitation and is looking forward to meeting him and discuss projects.
