After five years of battling with and recovering from coffee rust, a plague that afflicts the leaves of the coffee plants and turns them an orange-yellow color, the producers' fields are once again healthy and the future bright for the coffee industry in Peru, La Republica reports.

Almost a million Peruvians depend upon the cultivation of coffee. During the worst times of the plague, up to 60% of the total coffee was destroyed and prices plummeted, leaving aprox. 250,000 families in economic hardship.

Now, in 2017, the production of Peruvian coffee is expected to grow by up to 20%. This year, one grower from the department of Puno, Raúl Mamani, was given an award for no less than the best coffee in the world.

Now more than ever, Peru is poised to make a name for themselves in the specialty coffee industry. Stay tuned to this remarkable recovery and success story and let us know about your own experience with Peruvian coffee!
