Family takes 5-month road trip across South America

A Peruvian photographer took his wife and young daughter on an unforgettable trip in search of adventure and photo ops that spanned 16,000 miles.

From being crammed in the car between large coolers and an hyper-energetic younger sibling, to witnessing some really breathtaking views, reminiscing about family road trips can spark a mix of bittersweet memories.

For Javier Echecopar and his family, their road trip was likely filled with more sweetness than bitter. For five months, the Peruvian born traveler was accompanied by his wife and seven-year-old daughter on a drive through South America in their 4×4, visiting family and making new friends. Beginning in Santiago, Chile, the family explored Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Patagonia, and Peru, racking up a total of 16,000 miles.

Needless to say, the self-described “professional traveler, unprofessional photographer” captured countless beautiful images from the trip, many of which he shared on his Instagram with the hashtag #ourandeanadventure.

How did the idea come about?

“The concept of this trip focused on themes that my wife and I are both extremely passionate about'”the mountains and the connection between the different countries and cultures of South America,” Echecopar explained to travel magazine, AFAR, in a recent interview. “We said, '˜Why don't we do a trip that goes from the southernmost tip of the continent, through small villages and mountains, towards the northernmost tip?' And that's what we did.'
